INTJ Females: The Research Bug

This weekend there were a few discussions in the Facebook Group that were centered around research. We are knowledge happy and always want to be learning. For many of us, it was the saving grace in school growing up as kids. Sure, many of us weren’t the best at socializing or making and keeping friends, but our access to a lot of raw knowledge in one space was amazing and sort of made up for it. We had our textbooks and that was fine, but for a lot of us school is where we first got to sit and peruse material in a library, and from there we wanted to belong to our local city or town branch also. Was I excited to have a library card? Yes. I remember at my age that having an encyclopedia in your actual house was something only very lucky families got to experience, and even for those families, buying an entire set might be something that had to be done letter by letter in the alphabet and could take months or years.

I saw a post this morning about how we look up everything in the course of a day, and one of them was trying out a new restaurant, or going back to one we haven’t been to in ages – some of us will research the menu to see the meals, the sides, the prices, the bar selection, the parking, and anything else we might want to know before we go. Personally, I like to decide without the pressure of someone standing or sitting there looking at me waiting for me to choose. I like to take my time and look through it at my own pace. When I’m at the restaurant I’d rather enjoy the atmosphere and the people I’m there to spend time with and the experience of the menu almost takes me away from that. I will still of course ask what the waitress recommends, request the list of specials and ask my friends there what they like – and may even change my answer, but I will show up with a solid idea of what they serve and what I prefer.

I know it seems silly to general society, but we actually like to look stuff up. We like to read, follow podcasts or watch documentaries, or delve into audio books. Our personality type is an absolute sponge for knowledge, and it starts really young. It typically predisposes us to remain open minded and keeps us from becoming stubborn and ignorant (though I have learned there are definite exceptions) because as knowledge seekers we are aware of how little we know based on how much we index what we’ve learned.

I find that’s the opposite effect from people who do not seek knowledge as a default. Those people in my experience, anyway seem to think they know all they need to know – and they decided that a while ago. And no, you can’t tell them anything that will change their mind about the topic at hand, and if you suggest something they will take it personally rather than consider they may find it interesting. Ironically they will research to try to find information that backs up what they don’t want to pivot their thinking on. For most of us this is foreign, as we by nature like to get all angles of a topic and examine it, especially if we get some indication that it will be a discussion we’ll be invited to weigh in on. So, we search it. And with technology where it is now, we can quite literally stop, look something up on our phones to be sure we have all the facts, and keep going with the new information in a matter of minutes.

I have to mention the rabbit hole before I move on. That’s basically our tendency to be distracted from what we were looking for by something that has it’s own bunch of information because it catches our eye in the original set of data we’re browsing. I can only liken it to a buffet. We’ll walk to the table to put one item on a small plate and leave but while we’re heading to that one item, we see something we want to partake in on the way there. Then while we head for that item, we see something else, and on and on. Now imagine we have someone with us that has a cart. We can then say to them, “I want this thing here, but feel like I am going to forget this, while I’m heading to check out that item over there. Can you put this aside for me while I go that way?” And then let’s say you repeat this process several times. Before you know it you have a cart loaded with items you wanted to come back to, and one item that you’re sampling, it’s now been 3 hours and instead of the one thing you saw and promised you would stick to, you’ve now put aside 23 things and realize you don’t have time to sample any of them, so you have them put that cart somewhere until maybe tomorrow. Also the place the buffet is being served is closing and some manager is telling you they are closed and you have to leave. Tomorrow – new items, and a new cart. Well, you get the idea. It’s a wonder some of us even get anything done day to day.

At present in the group there is a sort of fun meme I found somewhere and posted asking what the last thing members Googled was. The responses are sort of amazing. Here’s a list of them (I’m sure INTJ Females that haven’t been involved in the thread will use these as a reference guide):

If you really want to get our attention, this is the type of stuff that we look up. Maybe for work, or daily life, or when we’re curious about something and can’t go on without knowing the details, or when we overhear something we just haven’t heard about yet and we make a mental note to look into it,because we may need that information somewhere for some reason. To say we are just curious about information is a serious understatement.

We are fairly organized and have ourselves together, but I have to admit this is one area where we completely lose track of time, of what we’re doing, where we are, and sometimes who we’re with. Perhaps it’s the universe throwing us some reckless balance. I have to run…I’m looking up some information on Bamboo Material and I got sidetracked.
